Permanent reduction of unwanted facial and body hair
Unwanted hair can be one of the most visible and persistent sources of gender dysphoria. For transfeminine individuals, facial hair in particular can undermine an otherwise affirming presentation, and no amount of makeup fully conceals a shadow. Laser hair removal offers a medically proven path to permanent hair reduction, freeing you from the daily cycle of shaving, waxing, and concealing so you can face the world with confidence.
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to target melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. The laser heats the follicle to the point where it can no longer produce hair, resulting in permanent reduction over a series of treatments. Because hair grows in cycles and the laser is only effective on follicles in the active growth phase (anagen), multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart are required to treat all follicles in a given area.
For gender-affirming patients, laser hair removal is often one of the first and most impactful steps in transition. Facial hair removal is the most commonly requested treatment, but body areas such as the chest, abdomen, arms, legs, and genital region are also frequently treated. Importantly, laser hair removal of the genital area is a pre-surgical requirement for patients planning vaginoplasty, as the skin used to create the vaginal canal must be free of hair-producing follicles.
Different laser technologies target hair follicles in slightly different ways. The choice of laser depends on your skin tone, hair colour, treatment area, and sensitivity. Our partner clinics use medical-grade devices operated by trained laser specialists to ensure both safety and effectiveness.
The alexandrite laser produces a wavelength of 755 nm that is highly absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft. It covers large areas quickly and is considered the gold standard for patients with lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick types I–III). A cooling device protects the skin surface during treatment.
The Nd:YAG laser uses a longer wavelength of 1064 nm that penetrates deeper into the skin and is less absorbed by epidermal melanin. This makes it the safest option for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI), where shorter wavelengths carry a higher risk of burns or hyperpigmentation.
The diode laser sits between the alexandrite and Nd:YAG in wavelength, offering a versatile middle ground. It provides effective hair reduction across a wide range of skin tones and is particularly effective on medium-to-coarse hair. Modern diode systems often feature built-in cooling for improved comfort.
Mild redness and a sensation similar to sunburn in the treated area are standard responses to the laser and typically resolve within a few hours. Cold compresses and aloe vera gel provide relief. You can return to your usual routine the same day.
Treated hairs begin to shed from the follicles over the following days, which confirms the laser has reached the follicle. Avoid hot baths, saunas, and intense exercise for 24–48 hours. Apply sunscreen to any treated areas exposed to sunlight.
Hair shedding continues as damaged follicles release their hairs. The treated area will appear progressively smoother. Avoid plucking or waxing between sessions; shaving is fine as it does not disturb the follicle.
Sessions are typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart for facial hair and 6–8 weeks apart for body hair, aligned with the hair growth cycle. Most patients require 6–10 sessions for facial hair and 6–8 sessions for body hair to achieve optimal results.
Laser hair removal is a non-surgical procedure with an excellent safety record when performed by trained professionals using appropriate laser settings for your skin type. Side effects are generally mild and temporary.
The most important safety factor is having your treatment performed by a qualified laser specialist who selects the appropriate device and settings for your skin type and hair colour. Our partner clinics conduct a thorough skin assessment and test patch before commencing your full treatment course.
Our pricing is transparent and all-inclusive, covering everything from specialist fees to aftercare.
